Below are some questions to help you reflect on the sermon:
Read 1 Kings 12:1-24. Rehoboam was advised to be a servant to his people, but he chose to rule with a heavier, harsher hand to prove his dominance. Where in our lives (parenting, workplace, relationships) are we tempted to use "harshness" to demand respect rather than leading through service?
Read 1 Kings 12:25-33. Jeroboam had God's promise that he would be king, but he panicked and built golden calves because he was afraid of losing control of the people. When you feel like you are losing control of a situation or a relationship, what "golden calves" (idols, backup plans, or manipulative tactics) do you tend to build?
Read 1 Kings 17:1-7. Elijah the Tishbite came from the middle of nowhere and had to rely on a drying brook and ravens for survival. Have you ever been in a "wilderness" season where God provided for you in a completely unexpected or bizarre way?
How does knowing that your future is entirely secure in Christ's sacrifice free you from the exhausting need to always be in control?
