Below are questions to help you and your household reflect on the sermon.

  1. Read Jeremiah 25:1-29. The "fourth year of Jehoiakim" was a date of infamy for Judah because they realized Babylon was coming for them. When you think about your own life, what was a "fourth year of Jehoiakim" moment for you—a day when everything suddenly changed and you felt completely uprooted?

  2. Because Judah refused to listen to God for 23 years, God said they would have to drink the cup of His judgment through the Babylonian invasion. Why does God's justice eventually require a response to human evil, idolatry, and the mistreatment of the poor?

  3. Read Matthew 26:36-46. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus asks the Father to let "this cup" pass from Him, but ultimately submits to drinking it. Based on the connection to Jeremiah 25, what exactly was in the cup Jesus drank for us on the cross?

  4. When we experience our own "fourth year of Jehoiakim" moments (grief, failure, diagnosis), we feel completely uprooted. How does the resurrection of Jesus guarantee that our worst days are not the end of our story?
